Amazon launches free streaming service

The US Internet giant Amazon is launching its free streaming channel "freevee" in Germany today. The company offers users the content of the new channel free of charge, the films and series are to be financed through advertising. The offer is already available in the USA and Great Britain. Austria is to follow as another European country at a later date.

Freevee is integrated into the Amazon website as an independent channel. Such channels can usually be booked for a fee. In contrast to the paid offer Amazon Prime, films and series are shown on freevee with commercial breaks. Users do not have to take out a subscription for this. However, an Amazon account is required to stream the series and films on the freevee channel, registration is not chargeable.

series and classics

An Amazon spokesman told the dpa news agency: "We offer users an offer that they would typically expect behind a paywall." It will be a mix of own productions, film productions from other companies and series that are in the portfolio through licenses. The broadcast of linear TV channels is also planned in the future. The freevee channel currently features classics such as "Who disturbs the nightingale" as well as series such as "Parks and Recreation" or "Peaky Blinders".

The group did not name a target for Amazon freevee customers in Germany, nor any sales. The group recently announced that it would increase the subscription prices for the Amazon Prime streaming service by almost a third from September 15 – from EUR 69 a year to EUR 89.90.
