Because of the war in Ukraine: France stops the Russian cargo ship "Baltic Leader" in the English Channel

French customs officials stopped the Russian freighter "Baltic Leader" in the English Channel off the coast of Honfleur and escorted it to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The operation took place this Saturday at 2 a.m. – as reported by France Bleu.

The 127-meter-long ship is suspected to be linked to Russian financial interests affected by EU sanctions over the war in Ukraine. A naval ship patrolling the English Channel to monitor migrants spotted the Russian cargo ship on the night of February 26.

According to the Maritime Prefecture, the freighter had started from Rouen with a crew of 20 people and was en route to St. Petersburg with cars on board.

The ship was authorized to sail in French waters. However, the customs authorities are now checking the connections between the shipping company and the owners with financial interests in Russia – and whether they are affected by the EU sanctions that have been decided.

According to Le Parisien, Véronique Magnin from the maritime prefecture spoke of a "strong suspicion" that the ship was actually subject to the sanctions.

On Friday, the European Union and the United States extended their sanctions to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over the war in Ukraine. Your personal assets abroad should be frozen. However, it is not clear whether the two actually invested money outside of Russia.
