Dog Zoey reunited with mum Michelle after 12 years

San Joaquin County Police Department in California is telling dog Zoey's emotional story as a feel-good moment. The animal has found its way back to its owner Michelle twelve years after its disappearance.

Animal Welfare Officer Brandon Levin received a call about a dog that had been abandoned outside of Stockton, police said on Facebook. The caller said the dog looked old and battered.

Animal rights activist Levin took care of the case and examined the found dog for a chip. And sure enough, he had a tracking app that showed it was Zoey. The dog was reported missing in Lafayette, California, in 2010 – 12 years ago.

The microchip company has listed Zoey as "deceased" since 2015.

But Zoey's owners at the time still had the same phone number, although they had since moved to Benecia.

In fact, Zoey was about 40 miles from her original home.

The police then captured the moment on video when Ms. Michelle was reunited with Zoey – thanks to the microchip.

And the story goes around the world.
