The shock of the employees of the Safran aviation company not far from Pau in the Pyrenees is great.
A 14-month-old child was found dead in a car in the helicopter turbine manufacturer's parking lot on Wednesday. The father had forgotten to take the little boy to the crèche in the morning. The approximately 40-year-old father apparently just left the baby in the car.
Only when the mother went to pick up the child at 4:30 p.m. from the crèche in Assat – near the Safran company in Bordes – did it become apparent that it wasn't there. The informed father rushed to the car – but by then the child was already dead.
It was only about 22 degrees warm in Bordes near Pau on Wednesday.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that the infant died of asphyxiation and dehydration," Pau prosecutor Cécile Gensac said in a statement. The prosecutor also explained that there were only a few cars in the spacious parking lot and that nobody heard anything.
The parents, who have an older child, are in shock, they could not be questioned at first and were taken to a hospital.
The Assat crèche was closed for the following two days. The workers were very saddened by the death of the little boy. The children of many Safran employees are cared for in the same day care center. Psychological help was offered in the crèche and in the company.
