Is office duty coming now?

It's back to the office. From March 20, employers will no longer be obliged to allow their employees to work from home if possible. If the development of the pandemic allows this, the home office obligation will no longer apply from March 20, as can be seen from the decision paper after consultations with the federal and state governments.

But many employees have gotten so used to working from home that they no longer want to be without their desks at home. Some also fear getting infected in the office. What will become of them now? Are they required to work in the office?

Home office option also in normal operation?

Questions to which the Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB) has clear answers: "Since we are unfortunately far from over the mountain in the pandemic, the opportunities for working from home should remain an element of operational protection against infection," said DGB boss Reiner Hoffmann of the German Press Agency in Berlin. He also called for "long-term solutions, for which the course should be set now".

"Home office should be made easier for the millions of employees who want to work from home at times during normal operations in the future."

Rules for the "home office of the future"

With its demands, the DGB goes far beyond the federal-state resolution. It only says: “However, employers can continue to offer work in the home office in agreement with the employees if there are no operational reasons to the contrary and this is in the interest of operational protection against infection.” No information is given on the future of the home office beyond the pandemic times and concerns about "operational protection against infection".

Hoffmann called on the federal government to quickly support the "home office of the future" with clear rules. Occupational health and safety should be regulated in a binding manner for the home office. Based on the experiences of the pandemic, the special stresses of working from home should be taken into account.
