Many more passengers in local transport

Many more people have used local trains in Germany in the spring months and since the introduction of the 9-euro ticket. From April to June, 46 percent more passengers traveled in local transport than in the first quarter of 2022. This is the result of a preliminary special evaluation published today by the Federal Statistical Office. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, there was even an increase of 74 percent.

"In addition to the easing of the corona measures, the 9-euro ticket that has been valid since June should also have contributed to the increases," said the statisticians. The ticket was approved as part of the federal government's relief package for the months of June, July and August to relieve consumers in the face of high inflation.

The average distance traveled by passengers in local rail transport in the spring was 25 kilometres. That was more than in the previous quarter with 22 kilometers and in the same quarter of the previous year with 21 kilometers. "The further distances are likely to be due to the nine-euro ticket, the corona measures had a comparatively small impact on this in the past," according to the statisticians.

Local rail transport makes a giant leap

The total number of kilometers traveled by all passengers – the so-called transport performance – increased significantly. In local rail transport, there was an increase of 68 percent compared to the previous quarter and 113 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

21 percent more passengers traveled on trams and light rail vehicles (including elevated, underground and suspension railways) than in the previous quarter and 48 percent more than in the same quarter of the previous year. "Thus, the growth was lower than in local rail transport," it said. The average distances traveled remained almost unchanged at around four kilometers.

The data from transport companies that count their passengers automatically and whose data was already “quality-checked” at the time of the analysis was evaluated for the statistics, as the Federal Office emphasized.

Debate on sequel

The nine-euro ticket for nationwide local public transport is valid until the end of August. A possible continuation of a discounted ticket is currently being discussed. The financing of the ticket for three months is part of the federal government's relief packages in response to the drastic price increases.

Without government measures such as the nine-euro ticket, inflation would have been even higher in recent weeks. Economists at the German Economic Institute (IW) have calculated that without government intervention the so-called harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) in June would have been two percentage points higher than the actually determined level at 10.2 percent.
