The rich buy more Rolls-Royces than ever before – “because life is short”

Here’s why

Rolls-Royce sold a whopping 49 percent more cars in 2021 than the previous year.

At 5586 units, it was the best sales year ever.

One of the reasons for this was the pandemic: people had realized that life can be short and wanted to enjoy today.

The traditional British manufacturer Rolls-Royce sold almost 50 percent more cars last year than in the previous year. A total of 5586 luxury cars went to buyers around the world, the BMW subsidiary announced Monday. 2021 was a “phenomenal year” for Rolls-Royce, said company CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

Rolls-Royce delivered more cars than ever before in the company’s 117-year history, he said. Demand was high all over the world – for example, for the Ghost base model and the 2.6-ton Cullinan SUV. Rolls-Royce is currently working on its first electric model called Spectre.

Müller-Ötvös also has an explanation as to why demand for the luxury cars – which cost between just under 300,000 and 544,000 Swiss francs in the UK – was so high last year. The Daily Mail quotes him as saying, “A lot of people have seen people around them die from Covid-19, and that’s made them think that life is short and it’s better to live it now than put it off until later.”

Most own more than one Rolls

That, she said, “massively encouraged” them to invest in “what I would call beautiful, lovely things.” People wouldn’t have been able to travel around much or invest in luxury services, but “a lot of money” accumulated that was spent on luxury goods, she said. “It was a phenomenal year,” Müller-Ötvös sums up. In the process, he says, many buyers expanded their collections – most Rolls fans own more than one model.

The near future also promises good figures: The order books are full until well into the third quarter of 2022. This is also because the waiting time for a new car is around one year. The current top sellers are the Ghost and the Cullinan SUV, which together account for 40 percent of sales. The electric Spectre is then to be launched on the market in 2023.
