The App Store ecosystem created a staggering $1.1 trillion in developer billings and sales last year. An independent study by the Analysis Group attributed this achievement to developers’ resilient growth, providing substantial opportunities for developers worldwide.

Over 90 Percent of Billings and Sales Benefitted Developers

More than 90 percent of the generated sales and billings went directly to developers, with Apple claiming no commission. This highlights the robustness and prosperity of the App Store ecosystem, which witnessed a year-over-year growth rate of 29 percent.

The App Store’s Contribution to Job Creation

The iOS app economy, facilitated by the App Store, now supports around 4.8 million jobs across the U.S. and Europe. The developers have also innovatively monetized their apps to build thriving businesses.

A Positive Outlook from Apple’s CEO

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, expressed optimism and inspiration drawn from the global community of developers. Cook reiterated Apple’s commitment to fostering developers’ success and the promising future of the app economy.

Growth Driven by Various Factors

Key drivers behind this growth include a revival in demand for sectors like travel and ride-hailing, along with an increase in advertising spend in apps. The App Store also observed a growth of 29 percent in developer billings and sales between 2021 and 2022.

Significant Growth among Small Developers

Small developers experienced an impressive revenue growth rate of 71 percent between 2020 and 2022. This outpaced larger developers and points towards a dynamic, innovative, and competitive marketplace.

Geographic Split of Growth

Since 2019, U.S. developers’ billings and sales have increased by over 80 percent. European developers saw an above-average increase of 116 percent in billings and sales during the same period.

Cross-Border Success and High User Engagement

The App Store’s global distribution platform facilitated cross-border downloads, with 54 percent of downloads occurring outside developers’ home countries. The platform also attracted over 650 million average weekly visitors worldwide in 2022.

Strong Growth Across Various App Categories

A new study from economists at Analysis Group revealed strong growth in developers’ billings and sales across a range of app categories. These include travel, ride-hailing, food and grocery sales, and enterprise apps, among others.

The App Store Celebrates its 15th Anniversary

Since its launch in 2008, the App Store has offered developers numerous opportunities. It has created an extraordinary economic opportunity for app creators worldwide, with iOS developers earning more than $320 billion on the platform from 2008 to 2022.

Expansive Monetization Options for Developers

Developers now have more options to monetize their businesses, including in-app purchases and subscriptions. They also have access to a variety of developer tools and educational resources.

The App Store as a Secure Marketplace

Apple’s App Store has maintained its reputation as a secure marketplace for users, thanks to its stringent App Review process and robust privacy and security protections. In 2022 alone, the App Store blocked over $2 billion in fraudulent transactions and rejected 1.7 million app submissions due to non-compliance with privacy, security, and quality standards.

In 2022, the App Store ecosystem facilitated $1.1 trillion in developer billings and sales, showcasing a robust growth in the digital market.

Over 90% of the sales and billings went directly to the developers without Apple taking any commission, indicating a thriving environment for app developers globally.
