The recruitment of Turkish workers to improve the tense personnel situation at German airports is apparently extremely slow.
Since July, 140 visa applications have been submitted to the German consulate general in Istanbul by employees in ground handling, according to a response from the federal government to a request from the Union faction, from which the "Rheinische Post" quoted. In only 32 cases a visa was granted after the background check was completed.
About 2000 workers should have come
Overall, the aviation industry is only expecting "a low three-digit number of assistants based on the special procedure," the federal government said, according to the newspaper.
The employers' association of ground handling service providers in aviation (ABL) had originally asked the Federal Employment Agency for easier entry for 2,000 Turkish workers.
The tourism policy spokeswoman for the Union faction, Anja Karliczek, spoke in the newspaper of a "strong blow into the water". It is now taking revenge that Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing and Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil ignored the problem for so long. "They should have given the approval for the recruitment much faster. The approval process was also designed much too late and too complicated," criticized the CDU politician.
The program is limited to the beginning of November
At the end of June, the federal government decided to make it easier for workers from Turkey to enter the country due to the lack of staff at the airports. At the beginning of July, the Federal Employment Agency gave the green light. The program was initially limited to the beginning of November.
The personnel problems at the airports and airlines had led to long waiting times for travelers, especially over the summer. Numerous flights have been cancelled.
